A trail leads along a steep hillside. The hillside is of soft tuff volcanic rock, with small to medium sized holes in some of the rocks. The trail is deeply incised into the tuff by thousands of years of foot traffic. The area around the trail is whiter than the pinkish rocks of the rest of the hillside, because of disturbed/overturned rock dust. There isn't much vegetation, just some scraggly junipers growing here and there. In the distance you can see mountains with a little snow on them.

Early morning sun raises a mist above Tirrell Pond, slightly ghosting Tirrell Mountain, Northville-Placid Trail, Blue Mountain Wild Forest, Adirondack Preserve, New York. September 11, 2024, 7:48 AM.

Looking across a very calm lake on a sunny morning. A soft blue sky with a few thin, gauzy clouds. The sun is a bright yellow oval with amorphous edges, mirrored on the still lake surface. A gossamer early morning mist hovers above much of the far end of the pond, catching the early morning sunshine. A small peninsula coming in from the left is covered with tall grass and low shrubs. Many tall, stalky water plants are just offshore around it. A mountain rises in the background with a section of sheer rock cliffs on its steep, otherwise wooded slopes facing us. A beautiful forest of spruce, fit and northern hardwoods surround the lake and covers the mountain. Some of those hardwoods are starting to show fall colors.

July 4, 1983: The first half-mile from the hut this morning climbed along the crest of the ridge forming the western rim of the ravine. This led to an interesting summit called Blackrock. It rose above the wooded ridge crest, a huge, barren mound of gray boulders smeared liberally with streaks of green paint.

It is very early in the morning. The clear sky has little color yet and is almost white. There is a lot of mist in the valleys below and mist and haze in the air. We are looking out from atop a mountain over the treetops on the mountainside below us into a maze of deep green mountains and hills and hollows below. With increasing distance, they take on a bluish tint from the haze and mist. The more distant mountains we can see are light blue gray ghosts.

My apologies, everyone. I forgot to add a picture yesterday. In a strange turn, I forgot because I was so focused on editing.

Given current events, my deep concentration this month is almost baffling me.

Maybe it’s a case of, what doesn’t kill me immediately makes me stronger?

Through dense fog, all that’s visible is the closest bare tree on the extreme right and the muted outline of the sun at center.

TIL there is something called "The Eastern Continental Trail" which is an ~6000 mile mega-trail running from Key West to Newfoundland (with some help of ferries) made by assembling several trails including the Appalachian Trail. Interesting... #hiking

The Trek · Dec 23, 2024Introduction to the ECT - The TrekIntroduction to the ECT - What's This All About? The ECT is a mega trail made up of several other trails. These "smaller" trails connect with one another to traverse all along the eastern part of North American. It's quite massive, totaling about 6,000 miles in length. The plan is to get to the southernmost point of the continental United States in Key West, Florida and start walking north. I already have a flight booked in early January to get me down to Florida. My goal will be to finish in one season and make it all the way up to Newfoundland where a bluff overlooks the Strait of Belle Isle. I expect it to be at least a 10-month journey if I'm able to pull it off...

I used to drive up to two hours one way for fly fishing. But as life has got busier, 45 minutes one way has become my max, even on weekends Thankfully, there are still plenty of great spots nearby to enjoy

Wetlands in autumn, Teal Pond, White Memorial Foundation, Morris, Connecticut. October 26, 2023, 3:33 PM.

Beneath a deep blue October sky with streaky white clouds, we are standing beside a large marsh surrounded a small, placid pool of water covered with lily pads. The water grasses and other aquatic plants of the marsh have mostly turned a deep golden brown. A large swath are sporting bright white blossoms, and several taller shrubs scattered throughout are decked out in vibrant red foliage. Tall, stately pines, hemlocks and hardwoods border the far side of the wetlands, the latter with past peak foliage in rust, golden brown and brick red.
