Juggling With Eggs<p>Ground source, air to air and community heat pumps were discussed in addition to the cheaper more readily available air source <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/heatpumps" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>heatpumps</span></a>. </p><p>How they work was explained in a very rudimentary way. </p><p>Unfortunately the bit where they explained having them on through the day as opposed to brief hour long blasts like you might with gas boiler was quickly followed by a look at electricity prices.</p><p>If you were already going to get one, this doc won’t put you off…but the doubters will still doubt.</p>

😀🚲<p>The cabinet and window <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/heatpumps" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>heatpumps</span></a> that refuse to run below 40°F are annoying in this weather but still running well from about noon to midnight. They keep running to a lower temp than the one where they refuse to start, some bizarre algorithms in their controls. Both are inverter driven and use interchangable remotes even though the brands are different. Seems like a firmware hack is needed. Some plug that switches on a resistance heater would be handy if the compressor truly can't cop/cope.</p>

Chu 朱<p>We are in our first winter here with our new heat pumps. They were installed in the fall of 2023 but we were away for the pit of winter last year. </p><p>Finally experiencing some cold days. I had promised a Mastodon update so here it is.</p><p>It struggles in the extreme cold just like it says. When it's below -10 outside, you can really hear it working hard. It also takes a while for the house to get sufficiently warm so on the really cold nights, we stopped turning things down during the night as it just has a hard time catching up during the day. Also, why add the excess stress to the electricity during the day?</p><p>You can see the electricity spikes on cold days. When we see the day by day breakdown, there are clear spikes on cold days.</p><p>I had joked last year that if it gets too cold for the heat pumps to do their thing, I will just bake a pie or bread. Indeed, that's more or less what I did. I have a pot of soup on and baked cookies on the super cold days over the break. The soup is a bonus b/c it's not only heat, it's moisture in the air. I also keep a pot of ginger tea on simmer. </p><p>We just got the electricity bill for the month and it's a bit of a shocker... but you have to keep in mind we are no longer paying gas. So when you take out the gas, it is still a savings by a large mile. </p><p>Overall, the heat pumps are fine. For the trade off of not paying the corrupt fossil fuel company, I am happy to accept the slower heat up during cold days and the horrors of baking up something delicious if I need to. </p><p>I think we are in general a little too spoiled to expect the house to heat up immediately. </p><p>I would still recommend a switch to heat pumps for people in cold climates. It's a cost savings and you get to give a finger to the methane distributor. You really aren't trading off that much. A slower heat up rate is nothing.
