Finding people works a bit differently on here as there deliberately isn't a central search engine (because someone nasty might take it over).
I've tried to do a guide for all the methods for discovering people to follow on here:
If your server's search isn't giving you interesting results, you might want to try methods such as Fediverse directories or Fediverse groups as these methods are both server-neutral.
@FediTips thanks, but I'm still confused. One thing this page says is, "You can find a lot of interesting accounts nowadays just by typing keywords into the search box on Mastodon." But search does NOT (in my experience) search the text of a profile. Said text must be in the handle or display name - super limited.
I don't think you have to be any particular age or skill level to use this place.
It can take a bit of time to get used to though as it is such a different structure. I hope I can help as the aim of my account is specifically to assist non-technical people
I had a look at your server's website, and it seems they don't have advanced search features installed. The advanced search requires the admin to install an add-on (called "elasticsearch"), but this costs extra so some admins don't install it.
You might want to ask your admin about this to make sure?
Because this place doesn't spy on users or run adverts, every server admin has to cover their server's costs and usually relies on donations from users to keep going.
