The big (180) Bluetti has been running the fridge for 2.5 hours is down to 75% power, which seems pretty good. We’ll switch it to the freezer here at about 11:30 I think, and give that 2 hours to bring the temp down. It recharges to 85% in 45 minutes, so after that I’m going to go beg an outlet from my neighbor with the whole house generator.

Pretty happy to have these batteries right now.

“The pair have a nine-month-old daughter and a three-year-old son – having a reliable way to #sterilise bottles and #BoilWater for formula was critical.

They knew the battery from their white #BYD Atto 3 could power their home using the vehicle-to-load system (#V2L) – a backup power system that allows the car #battery to power #appliances – but neither had actually hooked it up. They wondered how much it could handle.”

Lithium is one of the big metals in demand because of its use in batteries. But, there is constant improvement with alternatives.
An example is sodium batteries which show promise for several applications where they could be used instead of lithium (and potentially reduce the demand for lithium). The article mentions some other battery technologies too - but getting away from lithium and rare earth metals helps a lot of countries.

Stockhead · Alternatives to lithium-ion batteries are making their presence known - StockheadWhile lithium-ion batteries continue to dominate energy storage, alternative battery technologies are starting to gain traction.

The Flow Battery Research Collective (FBRC) are building an open source battery. Technology writer Koen Vervloesem did a nice write-up about their #FOSDEM talk in the Energy devroom. FBRC works on redox flow batteries which are better suited for long-term, stationary storage and less hazardous than Li-ion batteries. FBRC plan to democratize flow battery technology by developing an open source flow battery, starting with a development kit.

Scotland now home to Europe's biggest battery as windy storage site fires up.

Located at a site named Blackhillock near the small town of Keith, the battery can deliver up to 200MW of electricity and can store as much as 400MWh. Charging current flows into the facility from offshore and onshore wind turbines.

The facility will expand to 300MW/600MWh by 2026, enough energy to supply two hours of electricity to 3.1 million homes.

A little #sideProject I play with is making little #battery "surrogates" or dummy batteries. They let you debug circuit power issues or design goals, or let you make a battery-powered device into a much longer-lived device by using a larger battery or power supply.

They've been very useful for me, so I share them a bit too.

I've just recently made a #CR1632 sized one which is quite a challenge to fabricate. It's very tiny with tinier routing channels.
