It's that time of year again #Strava #StravaYearInSports
Pretty active year
It's the yearly pump-'em-up-with-stats.
Buddy and I were just chatting on how strava says we were more active than 98% of the other users and all I could think was, “Sorry to hear about your inactive accounts and bot problem Strava!”
1,300 of those miles were virtual, which would have been during recovery the first few months of the year. The new gravel bike clocked 1,100 miles, I really enjoyed that. I've only been running for a couple of years, 55 days for 255 miles and 30k feet is an OK year for me.
Cobbled together Strava stats for 2024. They say I'm “1,888 mi ahead of pace” for biking. ":^)
I started the year off recovering from big gut surgery, so no strenuous activity. First time using an indoor trainer (Zwift), unfortunately I can't figure out easy way to differentiate between real rides and virtual. As soon as it got warm out I bought a gravel bike and switched to that and put on a lot of miles. I've only been running for a couple years, so for me this was a lot! Hiking and walking are mostly the same thing, heading into the woods for an hour or so, wandering, taking photos of mushrooms and ice.
In order to sign up for the #Garmin Connect API you need a privacy policy hosted on your business website, which makes two things I don’t (currently) have.
So…am I going to write/find a minimal privacy policy just to poke around at the API?
With the recent #Strava API policy changes I’m considering making myself some tools for processing my GPX files from my run, which are all published from my watch to Strava by Garmin.
Bike Tooter, if you’re looking for an alternative to Strava, now is the time to subscribe to Ride With GPS. Through the end of the year you’ll get 15 months for the price of 12. I’ve used Ride With GPS for years and it’s the best app I’ve tried for creating routes and cataloguing my ride data. They’re a small, but very capable team of passionate bike folk. I’m not affiliated with them in any way — just a very satisfied customer.
Especially for the "works only on web" part: You have to build the feature _at least_ 3 times if you don't go with #PWA. And if you decide to _not_ build it in native, then frankly that's just super crap User Experience.
Looking at you #Strava. Your excuses are pathetic for some of the things that are missing.
As expected, Strava is ruining Wandrer, but not in a major way yet.
Leaderboards will become opt-in, which is probably something that should've been done before, but user maps are gone. The creator is considering switching to other route-sharing platforms.
How realistic would a #federated #strava alternative be? Privacy issues with health data and gpxes might be a problem. I like the social aspect of strava, but not a fan of #enshitification either. Maybe its just time to keep my activity data internal and lean on other social media/mail lists (if those are a thing anymore) for group rides and stuff
@BicycleBen Still using #Komoot, even though it is far down the enshittification process and has even more trackers than #Strava: https://reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/reports/de.komoot.android/latest/
In conversations I’ve had today, it’s apparent there is a lot of misunderstanding re this #Strava crap, which actually just exasperates what an awful comms job they’ve done around a rotten decision. Most users aren’t gonna be affected.
I can’t see why they would as they’ve own standalone business models, but if the big players decide to ‘withdraw services’ it could get fun, mind.

What alternatives to #Strava are people using? I only really use the route planner plus the squares tracking in #Veloviewer, which is a nice to have but not essential. Easy export of my activity history is handy too. Might stop my sub on renewal in July - £50 is a lot for limited benefits.

What are #Strava doing with these API changes? I doubt I will be renewing when the time comes.

It is always fun when a company makes a change and then bans their community from discussing it.
#strava, this is not how I expected to be rewarded for being a subscriber from nearly day one. Please pump the brakes on this speedrun to enshittification, dorks. Thanks
Strava’s Big Changes Aim To Kill Off Apps

Sounds a lot like #enshitification from #Strava as it is trying to become a walled garden where only it has access to all your data...
I do upload my workout data to Strava, but not directly. I am an iPhone user and I use HealthFit to sync any workout in Apple Health to the different platforms that I use.
But I also use HealthFit for analytics, statistics and health. It’s a really great app.
Sigh. Strava why you gotta be such a dick?
