#Oscars is running an ASL livestream. It doesn't show the ceremony, I'm sure. It's meant to be viewed alongside a legit stream of the ceremony, and will just be ASL interpretation.

#ASL question: the signs I'm seeing for "god" all seem imply the cross to me, some people do it like a cross being raised, and some like part of a catholic crossing themselves. Am I reading into that?
If not… what about Hindu gods? Praying to Ganesha "You are the god who's watched over me this whole journey."
And what about plurality like "Gods I love this" ? Referring to a pantheon like that seems extra effed up if you're pluralizing a Jehova / Jesus based sign.
So, I've been hyperfixating on #ASL lately, idk if I'd feel up to joining one, but I've been wondering if there are any regular jitsi (or other floss vidchat service) chat groups for people to practice sign.
Anybody know of one?
#Drumf (#Trump) just banned use of the word #Felon in the #WhiteHouse

watching "#ASL Landforms for kids"
Literally the first sentence is "When you hear the word landforms…"
Sorry. What‽ When your primarily deaf audience members do _what_?
#accessibility matters and the most important and _easiest_ tool is to put yourself in the shoes of the person you're trying to accommodate.
How is a #deaf kid going to feel when you ask them what they think when they "hear" something, or what about when you ask a #blind kid what they think of when they "see" something.
In related news. I was trying to figure out of there was an #ASL sign for Throuple or Threesome when I came across that.
I haven't found found signs for either of those, or one for #polyamory
I'm really hoping this finds its way to some poly signers who can let me in on the secret words. I'm finding it hard too believe folks are always finger-spelling all the consensual non-monogamy terms.
I was wondering how the hell Elizabethan English was handled in #ASL and I came across this. And Holy shit I can't imagine wanting to see a play more than I want to see Hamlet in ASL.
Not that I'd have a clue what was being said, but holy shit I'd learn to be able to watch that.
The book I'm #writing has 3 characters who regularly communicate via #ASL So, I keep having to look up signs to check if that word would come across with the right feeling / emotion in sign.
And sometimes I'm just curious.

"glazed over" / "glazed look" https://www.handspeak.com/word/8326/
and "flustered" (especially how the guy in the left video here expresses it) https://www.signasl.org/sign/flustered
I think flustered's a new favorite sign. It conveys it SO much better than the English word.

If you are not aware: there's a right wing push against #ASL interpreters; utter weirdos really cannot live with shit not being exclusively for them.
Fuck them assholes.

My thanks to @clive for highlighting "#ASL #poetry" within the #deaf community I belong to, but people should be careful here: many deaf people don't like this concept, because it's a reminder of the bad ol' days when ASL was considered pantomime instead of a real language, i.e. "just a bunch of monkeys pointing at things." Be careful talking about this subject with deaf people, and don't be surprised if they get angry at you for saying, "Sign language is so beautiful!"
Hello Universe!
Moved to new server.
Re-introduction--Been on here for a while and should write an intro. I'm deaf, I'm a fan of open-source projects, so this will be short and sweet.

Your best bet would be at any centre for the deaf. There are regular socials here where folks mingle and learners are included. I studied 3 levels of ASL but retained next to nothing because I had nowhere to practice any but the simplest of signs (with children with developmental disabilities).
I enjoyed the process of learning it and loved the grammar structure.

Having a go at learning #ASL. It's been an encouraging start with the Lingvano app. Does anyone have ideas for finding actual people to practice with?
Does anyone know of a good online course to learn the basics of American Sign Language?
Starting from the very beginning, no prior experience.
I have someone I can practice with already, but need a slow-paced course to help pace my learning and not overwhelm me. I.e. little bite-sized learning chunks are what works best for me.
