Countries must bolster climate efforts or risk war, Cop30 chief executive warns

Ana Toni also criticises the UK’s plans to slash overseas aid to fund defence spending

“Climate change is an accelerator of inequalities and poverty, and we know that the consequences of inequality and poverty can turn into wars in the future,” she said. “The fight against climate change needs to be seen as something that’s not divorced from the big security issue of humanity.”

The Guardian · Countries must bolster climate efforts or risk war, Cop30 chief executive warnsBy Fiona Harvey

"Excavators, piled up tree trunks, and a long strip of exposed earth in the middle of the Amazon.... This is the mark left by a highway project currently under construction in Belém, Brazil, the BBC reported on Wednesday, March 12. This four-lane highway, more than 13 km long, through the heart of the rainforest, aims to "ease traffic flow in the city" ahead of COP30, the 30th edition of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, where tens of thousands of participants are expected, from November 10 to 21.

When questioned by the BBC, regional authorities defend the "sustainability" of the project, named "Liberty Avenue."

Amazon forest felled to build road for climate summit

"A new four-lane highway cutting through tens of thousands of acres of protected Amazon rainforest is being built for the COP30 climate summit in the Brazilian city of Belém.

It aims to ease traffic to the city, which will host more than 50,000 people - including world leaders - at the conference in November.

The state government touts the highway's "sustainable" credentials, but some locals and conservationists are outraged at the environmental impact.

The Amazon plays a vital role in absorbing carbon for the world and providing biodiversity, and many say this deforestation contradicts the very purpose of a climate summit."

@fulelo
This is NOT a road for #COP30! It's bullshit framing by local politicians who wanted this highway for totally different reasons.
Too bad and very disappointing that the #BBC just repeats this cover-up story.

Edit: Here's the BBC map of the new highway. I added the location of #COP30 as well It's far away.

Edit: some answers point that COP is probably not the only reason for this highway project to go through. Regardless of that, I would say COP should use its power to block the highway ASAP, instead of (apparently) encouraging it.

US will be ‘central’ to climate fight even without Trump, says #Cop30 president

“The US is a key country in this exercise. There is the US government, which will limit its participation [but] the US is a country with such amazing technology, amazing innovation – this is the US that can contribute. The US is a central country for these discussions and solutions.”
