Hybrid lecture: 'Medical practitioners in the Medieval Gaelic world: Myth and history’ this Thursday

The University of Edinburgh's John Bannerman Lecture will take place this Thursday, 13 March, in person at 40 George Square at 5:15 pm GMT (= 1:15 pm EDT), with a promised 'hybrid' format. The speaker is Prof Deborah Hayden of Maynooth University, who will discuss the transmission of medical knowledge in Gaelic in late medieval and early modern Ireland and Scotland.

This is a particularly apt subject for a lecture in memory of my former teacher Dr John Bannerman, among whose scholarship was the book 'The Beatons: a medical kindred in the classical Gaelic tradition'.

On 16 Sept 1642 Rosa O'Doherty signed this letter. Here it is for #InternationalWomensDay2025 , 383 years later. This is possibly a unique surviving example of a 17thC signature of a #Gaelic Irishwoman. (The letter is now in @ucdarchives part of the Franciscan collection)

The bean-nighe (Scottish Gaelic for "washerwoman") or "Washer at the Ford" is a Scottish fairy and omen of death. She appears as an old woman at some desolate stream or pool, where she is washing the blood from the grave clothes of someone who will soon die.

We finished watching Crà at my mother's house last night. It is very dark and implausibe but great television. In the Gaelic with English subtitles. Crà roughly translates to both anguish and destruction.

We really enjoyed ‘Faodail: Found Film’ (BBC Alba), not a documentary really, but a curated collection of archive, mainly personal film from the Hebrides, 1930-1970. A fascinating watch, mainly Gaelic with English subtitles.
